Election Day in Searcy

Don’t be alarmed but I’ll be asking for a Republican ballot.
My neighbor, Mike Chalenburg, is running for re-election as alderman and has an opponent in the GOP primary.
Mark Pate, one of my former students, is running for district judge.
Mike’s done a great job on the city council and deserves another term. Mark served three successful terms in the state legislature and I think he’ll make a good district judge.
So I’m going to swallow my pride and run with the elephants today and vote for Mike (again). Fortunately, the judge’s race is non-partisan so it doesn’t matter there.
I think it should be that way for city council races as well.
Mike and Mark are both likely winners today.

Anyone else annoyed with the candidates camping out in the parking lot of the polling place?
Drives me crazy. One candidate tried to come up and talk to me, I told him I thought it was inappropriate for the candidates to be here, and he asked if he could at least shake my hand. NO!
Grrr…

I voted at First Assembly of God and I only saw one candidate’s representatives and they were well away from the entrance.
I’ve worked as a poll watcher a couple of times and it may be one of the worst jobs in the world.
I’d like to do an exit poll someday measuring the effectiveness of that kind of thing. There must be some effectiveness to it or the candidates wouldn’t bother with it at all.

I voted at West Race Baptist Church. Candidates present (or a representative) include: Hodges, Sterling, Niblock, Worley. There was another, but I forget them now.
It probably *feels* effective. When I told Hodges I didn’t think they should be out there, he replied that he had to since the other candidates were. Insert your own commentary here about doing something because everyone else is doing it is leadership or not. :-/

At Downtown Church of Christ there were a couple candidates or their representatives (I specifically recognized Calvin Mitchell) present, but none of them spoke to me. I was asked to sign the petition to have a ballot initiative preventing adoption or foster care by co-habitating individuals, but declined.

There were a couple of candidates at my polling place, but it doesn’t bother me for them to be there. On the contrary, I often don’t know much about the local races, and visiting with the candidate or a represenative at the polls is an easy way to get at least a little information.
I voted for Keith Williams today in the Democratic primary. I figure that with his ties to Harding and Beebe he will defeat his opponent who, I believe, was from Judsonia.
I’m looking forward to having two of my personal acquaintences running to represent district 49.

Kieth is a good guy. I just met him this semester.
We was on the White County election commission for a short time.
And he rejects the conventional spelling of his name in favor of “Kieth”.

You said “We was” … that’s funny.

Oops… “He was”…
But it was funny.
