California Dreamin’

I generally don’t announce when I’m going out of town for long periods of time anymore but I’m going to make an exception this week.
I think the word is already out that I’m going to California this weekend to attend a graduation ceremony at Pepperdine. I’ve already told all of my students I’ll be gone, so it’s not really that much of a secret now anyway.
This will be my first visit to Pepperdine since 1983. I’m really looking forward the trip for a number of reasons, the chief of which will be getting to see one of my favorite former students, Haley Ayraud, get her diploma from Pepperdine’s graduate school of public policy. I’m really proud of her and I usually don’t get to see my students graduate from two different schools.
And there are a few other people I want to see while I’m in Malibu as well and you know who you are.
The forecast in central Arkansas is calling for rain over the next three days.
As soon as somebody can get me a forecast for SoCal through Saturday, I’d appreciate it.
I need to know what to pack.

There are quite a few microclimates in Malibu, but I’ve found that the Yahoo weather forecast best forecasts the weather here on campus:

Pack a light jacket - it gets cool during the evening and morning hours. It’s also cooler downstairs in the guest room.

Too bad you can’t take your bike!

What makes you think I’m not?
I actually considered taking it b/c I wanted to be able to say someday that I have biked part of the Pacific coast highway.
My host (malibulibrarian) has assured ME that his brother-in-law keeps a road bike at his place and I can use it for a quick spin.
But if it’s a 1976 Schwinn Continental, he’s in big trouble.

I accidentally hit delete instead of “approve” on your post and link.
Sorry; resubmit and I promise not to do it again.
I was deleting a bunch of spam and I got carried away…

ME,
As you bike in California, be careful not to breathe in too much of the “smug” which is pervasive near L.A. It’s unhealthy, and I’ve heard it makes you soft.

Go to venice and eat at Moa’s Kitchen off windward circle. They have great chinese food, seriously. The actual reason I am commenting was in response to a blog created in 2006. I was a student of Dana Deree’s at Little Rock Central High. He was an incredible teacher whom I always admired. Does anyone know how to get in tough with him? Is still working for the foreign service?

wcalkbrenner: I’m sure Dana would be glad to hear from you. He is still in the FS.
He’s on Facebook and I’ll send you his email address.

My dad does a century that goes along PCH for a bit. It’s in September I think, just in case you need a reason to return.
