Quick, Go Hide the Joy Bus

White County Judge candidate Dennis Gillam claims he lost the Searcy precincts because of the involvement of Harding University.
In the Daily Citizen today, he goes as far as to suggest that we had a plan to get students to all of the Searcy precincts that he lost on Tuesday:
That’s where the buses from Harding were [...]

Here are the top-ten searches this month:

“international house of pancakes” bush foreign policy
kazak pork fat
jelly fish reproducing

Happy Birthday, Fred Jewell

In all the excitement about the run-off election and other matters yesterday, I completely forgot to mention that yesterday was my friend and colleague Fred Jewell’s 65th birthday.
We successfully surprised Fred yesterday in the conference room with a birthday cake yesterday afternoon. He was tricked into thinking that we were having a meeting. [...]

100,000 Visits

There’s nothing quite like watching an odometer roll over.
I heard yesterday at a teleconference on political blogging that Eschaton gets over 100,000 hits a day. It only took me thirteen months to get there.
So why do we find 100,000 more interesting that 100,001? From whence springs our obsession with round numbers?
Visitor #100,000 came from [...]

“Landslide” Lincoln

Results for the White County Judge’s race:

Michael Lincoln (R): 5,756 (51.72%)
Dennis Gillam (I): 5,573 (48.28%)

The difference was 183 votes out of 11,129 ballots cast.
When I left the courthouse at 8:30 tonight, Lincoln had a comfortable lead (55%) but that count obviously did not include the rural White County ballot boxes.
I’m not an advisor to the [...]

Congratulations (Again) Mrs. Mayor

Results of the run-off race for mayor in Searcy, Arkansas:

Mayor Belinda LaForce (D) 2,115 (50.20%)
Dale Brewer (R) 2,098 (49.80%)

Yes, that’s a difference of 17 votes.
We all thought it would be close tonight, but not that close.
A recount would come at candidate Brewer’s expense at twenty-five cents a vote ($1,000) and would involve a hand-count of [...]

I Ask Questions, I Get Answers

TDS’s Senior Middle East Correspondent John Oliver offers the following answers to my question, “If it’s not a civil war, then what is it?”
Crooks and Liars has the video.

An ongoing scuffle between sectarian insurgent groups.
An internal serenity challenge.
A faith-based melee.
A territorial oggle-bogle of regional qualms.

Note to students: And forget what I said in American Foreign [...]

Bonus Elections

White County must be filled with very good little boys and girls this holiday season because we’re getting another election as an early Christmas present. And by all indications, the two remaining elections here in Searcy are going to be very close.
I think this is the first time that I’ve voted in a November [...]

Declared Civil War

Somebody had to be the first and the credit goes to Matt Lauer of the NBC’s Today Show:
As you know, for months now the White House has rejected claims that the situation in Iraq has deteriorated into civil war. And for the most part, news organizations, like NBC, have hesitated to characterize it as such. [...]

Parental Warning: Happy Feet

Even before I went to see the new animated penguin film Happy Feet with my family on Friday, I had heard that there has been some disapproval of the film in conservative circles because of its strong environmental message.
Add to that message “individualism” and the dangers of blind orthodoxy and you get the idea.
Naturally, the [...]
