This Week’s Sign of the Impending Apocalypse (#48)

An auto dealership in Columbus, Ohio has cancelled a promotional campaign called “Fatwa Fridays” and admitted that the sales gimmick was “a misguided attempt at humor.”
The radio advertisement for Dennis Mitsubishi in Columbus that declared “jihad” against the US auto market was cancelled before it ever aired.
The innovative marketing scheme would have featured salesmen wearing [...]

The Passing of a Legend (1929-2006)

Deepest condolences to the family and friends of the latest victim of the current E.coli outbreak related to the consumption of raw spinach.
America has lost a patriot and defender or the weak and helpless.
As a fellow sailor, I mourn his passing. He will be missed.
Naturally, my thoughts are with Olive Oyl and Sweetpea at [...]

Madeline Albright

My students and I had a great visit to the Clinton Presidential Library and the new world headquarters for Heifer International in Little Rock yesterday. Before we toured those facilities, we attended a presentation by former Secretary of State Madeline Albright at the Statehouse Convention Center.
I’ve already written a post on the Clinton [...]

C.M.

Last year, just before the Philadelphia Eagles suspended Terrell Owens from the team for a week during the pre-season, I mentioned to my older brother that T.O. was like poison to a team and that the Eagles would be better off releasing him.
I suggested that no general manager in the NFL in his right mind [...]

Road Trip

I’ll be out of pocket most of the day. I’m taking two of my classes to a public presentation by Madeline Albright in Little Rock and then a tour of the Clinton Library and the headquarters of Heifer International.
This will be my first chance to see the inside of the new Heifer building. It [...]

Mike Chalenberg for Searcy City Council, Ward 4

My nextdoor neighbor is running for Searcy city council and you should vote for him if you live in Ward 4.
Mike Chalenberg has been a great neighbor and a good friend to me at Harding over the years. He cares about Searcy and will serve the public good. I think that is about the best [...]

Frankencandidate

A lot of people assume that election season is my favorite time of the year. The truth is that as much as I appreciate the democratic process, there are several aspects of putting people in office that drive me crazy.
The two of the specific things I dislike the most about elections are yard signs and [...]

Good News About Good People

Last March, I had the privilege of going to Louisiana to do some hurricane Katrina relief work with a group of Harding students led by Jacob Edwards. It was one of the best experiences I’ve had in my life and has resulted a growing personal affection for the city of New Orleans.
I’m planning [...]

This Week’s Sign of the Impending Apocalypse (#47)

A Missouri woman is seeking permission from her local health department to allow her to take her pet monkey into local restaurants as a service animal.
Officials are trying to determine if Springfield, Missouri resident Debby Rose can be accompanied by her bonnet macaque monkey (Richard) who she says provides emotional support for her anxiety disorder. [...]
