Everything’s Up to Date in Kansas City
If you want to see some sin, forget Paris and go to Kansas City. With the possible exception of such renowned centers as Singapore and Port Said, Kansas City has the greatest sin industry in the world. - Edward R. Murrow
We got into Kansas City late last night from Texas because we made a detour [...]

Zoos v. Aquariums
The zoo is a prison for animals who have been sentenced without trial and I feel guilty because I do nothing about it. I wanted to see an oyster-catcher, so I was no better than the people who caged the oyster-catcher for me to see. - Russell Hoban
When Tish and I started running down the [...]

Fort Worth
Tish and I are spending a couple of days with our friends Carter and Holly Davis in Ft. Worth, Texas trying to convince Carter that he needs to update his blog with more stories about his kids. We’ve decided that is his niche.
Carter and Holly took us to the Texas Rangers’ game in Arlington last [...]

Memorial Day, 2006
Like many Americans, I’m on the road today for Memorial Day Weekend.
Tish and I are spending a couple of days in Dallas and then we’re going to Kansas City because I’ve always wanted to go there.
This is a special Memorial Day at Harding University — for the first time in the school’s history, Memorial Day [...]

Religious broadcaster and one-time presidential candidate Pat Robertson claims that he can leg-press 2,000 pounds. Robertson’s physician supervised the event and claims to have leg-pressed 2700 pounds himself.

The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas
Each summer at Arkansas Governor’s School and at Hardings Honors Symposium, I have my students read and discuss “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” by Ursula K. Le Guin.
Le Guin is a science fiction/fantasy writer of some merit — my friends who know more about science fiction than I do tell me that she’s [...]

First Official Post at WordPress
I think I’ve got this thing working now, but I’ve got a long way to go.
To comment, you have to register. I’ll get something more substantial up as soon as I get the training wheels off.
Thanks to Greg and Justin for the help.

New Harding Seal
Harding is in the process of updating its school seal.
The new seal was unveiled to the faculty yesterday via e-mail. If you are an alumnus of the school, you will immediately recognize that the new design (left) is radically different from the current seal on your diploma (below).
Don’t worry, your diploma is still valid. But [...]

Primary Day
It’s primary day in Searcy and throughout Arkansas. I’m going to get to try out our new voting machines at the end of class today.
Arkansas has early voting, so I’ve actually waited until the last minute. As it turns out, early voting may have posed a disadvantage to taller voters in the state – a [...]
