This Week’s Sign of the Impending Apocalypse (#9)
Somebody in Nashville has stolen the “nun bun” from a local coffee shop.
The bun was discovered in 1996 employees of the Bongo Java coffeehouse on Belmont Boulevard who noticed a strong resemblance between a cinnamon roll and the late Mother Teresa. The bun has been on display at the coffee shop ever since and has [...]

Putting Things in Perspective
The motel we’re staying in at Hattiesburg is pretty crummy.
The beds are lumpy and our room smells like it had hosted an aerobics class and the Hattiesburg, Mississippi cigar-of-the-month club before we got there. The bath towels are too small and there are never enough of them. The continent breakfast is the worst I’ve ever [...]

Bay St. Louis, Mississippi
You’ve heard this before and probably more eloquently elsewhere but the television images don’t do it justice.
The Gulf coast is a wreck — I’ve never seen anything like this before in my life and I hope I never see it again.
You can’t miss the signs of Katrina’s path along the highway between Hattiesburg and Bay [...]

Hattiesburg, Mississippi
We’re leaving for Bay St. Louis, Mississippi in a couple of hours to help with hurricane clean up.
I have no idea what we’ll be doing once we get there. We have a couple of rakes and hammers and twelve teenagers, so I’m sure we’ll have it all cleared up in a day or two.
We’ re [...]

Youth in Action 2005
I’m going to be out of pocket again for the next couple of days.
Alan and I will be attending Youth in Action in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and working with hurricane relief there until Friday.
Alan has been teasing me about this event ever since I agreed to go on trip. I thought I was volunteering to help [...]

Banned in Bandar Contest Winner
I asked a family member and occasional lurker on the blog to serve as anonymous judge in the Banned in Bandar contest.
He doesn’t know any of you and has excellent taste in music (I think he may be a closet Toby Keith fan).
The winner is J. Burton with his entry, “I Ran (So Far Away)” [...]

This Week’s Sign of the Impending Apocalypse (#8)
A Nebraska angler has landed a rainbow trout with two mouths.
Clarence Olberding, 57, said that he knew the fish was special when he tried to take the hook out of it. That’s when he noticed the second mouth, which did not appear to be functional.
Don Gabelhouse, the head of the fisheries division of the Nebraska [...]

Be a Scrooge
I’ve always felt bad for Ebenezer Scrooge. His last his name gets thrown around a lot this time of year as a general epithet for anyone who hates Christmas. The irony of course is that Ebenezer turned out to be a pretty good guy.
Scrooge was better than his word. He did it all, and infinitely [...]

Holiday Traditions
We didn’t have too many established Christmas traditions in my family growing up so I’ve had to develop my own.
Right now, I’ve got two of them at either end of the cultural spectrum.
I read Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol (1843). If you haven’t read it, you should; it’s a fantastic book and a relatively easy [...]

Banned in Bandar
I haven’t done this in awhile, but it’s time for a new contest.
My blog hasn’t seen any real creative competition since I asked readers to identify the worst church marquee they had ever seen.
Here’s the set-up…President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran is no friend of America, Israel, or the West. I suspect that he either thinks [...]
